Bilateral Orchiectomy
Overview
In order to have an Orchiectomy, you must first consult with Dr. McGinn and
have 2 Letters of Recommendation for Surgery from Mental Health Care
providers.
Dr. McGinn strongly recommends Estrogen
Replacement therapy after this
surgery in order to prevent oesteoporosis.
The orchiectomy surgery can be an intermediate or final surgical step in the
transition process. This particular surgery removes the testicles resulting
in the absence of testosterone production and ability to reproduce. Orchiectomy is recommended for patients who have extenuating employment or relationship
circumstances which prevent GCS (Vaginoplasty). It is also recommended for
patients with health problems preventing CHT (also known as HRT) or full GCS.
To the benefit of Dr. McGinn's patients, orchiectomy surgery is performed in the hospital under general anesthesia. It is not performed in the office, nor is it performed under local anesthesia. This insures the most comfort to the patient. Patients are discharged from the hospital on the same day under the care of a family member or friend. Driving is prohibited for 24 hours after surgery. Patients are not permitted to leave the hospital alone. If a patient reports to the hospital alone for surgery, the surgery will be cancelled.
Most patients report back to work within 3-5 days after surgery at a light duty capacity. An official notarized letter for legal document changes will be provided after surgery is performed. It is also recommended to have at least one follow-up appointment post-operatively.
